The holidays are my favorite time of year to watch altruism in action.  Whether it’s volunteering in a soup kitchen or buying toys for children in need, the holiday season always seems to touch the philantrhopic nerve in everyone.  This past year was a rough one on everyone thanks to the economy, but there were many people out there who had it rougher than we could possibly imagine.  For some of those people, the opening of CityWalk@Akard was the greatest Christmas present of all.  For those of you that aren’t familiar with it, CityWalk@Akard is a mixed-use, residential development that includes 200 residential units for workforce, affordable housing, and 50 of those units have been set aside for formerly homeless individuals who qualify for permanent housing.  The project provides a hand up for those trying to better there life or need a better living situation for themselves and their families.  In order to qualify, individuals must go through rigorous background checks and adhere to strict rules within the residents.  There is currently a waiting list of people hoping to gain tenancy there, and folks have now started moving in.   The CityWalk@Akard project is an amazing addition to our Downtown community, and I’m so thankful they provide the services they do.

Speaking of, an amazing story was posted on their blog a couple weeks ago:  http://citywalktalk.blogspot.com/2009/12/new-beginning.html.  It’s a heart warmer.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Cheers – Ariel
